Hollywood Bowl

August 2019,  Dave Koz and Dan at the Hollywood Bowl

Ok, this is my blog for October only its November 3rd. And again, I write flying somewhere, but this time going home. We just left Kentucky which is just across the river from Cincinnati Ohio where we played last night at a venue called the Ludlow Garage, it was actually a garage on Ludlow St but was long ago converted into a music venue made famous by groups like the Allman Brothers, Santana, and many more. Recently renovated we played to a packed amazing audience. So far, our tour has gone well, and the music and show are taking on their own flow-which is a good thing.

I’d like to talk about playing the Hollywood Bowl just a couple of months ago in August. We haven’t had the opportunity to play the bowl in a very long time but were invited by host Dave Koz even though we didn’t necessarily “fit” the style of the show. Beyond Dave and his show was the Commodores, so we were kind of an anomaly— which is usually the case anyway. The thing is. Dave didn’t necessarily need us for his show, but he invited us anyway. Very cool. Oh, and the show overall did well. When we were at soundcheck early in the day before the show, I thanked him for having us and also reminded him about the first time we ever met him.

It was in the 80s and Pat Sajak had a network evening talk show and we performed, and June and I were even invited to sit and chat with Pat (who was very nice). Anyway, all of this was pretty nerve wracking for us. Doing our soundcheck for this TV show a young cat who was in the Sajak show band introduced himself and was cool and supportive. Yup it was Dave Koz.

Just wanted to note that even in a crazy business-like music there are very cool people and great human moments.

Oh, and at that TV show after we did our segment, I literally walked into Meryl Streep who was walking out of her dressing room to do her segment - and she apologized to me!

And after our set at the bowl one of the Commodores came up to me and said “man, you all were NEXT LEVEL!”
